Ok, whole new quilt on the design wall. This is "LAST" Nicolas' Graduation Quilt. The pattern is from Quiltmaker, May/June 2013 and the pattern is called Over Under (page 39). I showed my very disinterested 18 year old the pattern and asked him to pick colors but he could have cared less and just said to get the same colors. I got a bright green, teal, lighter blue and a green yellow. I ordered two colors of Kona Cotton, black and Pepper, and the pepper looked so much better!! The quilt is larger than I wanted so I cut back on the numbers of squares (the pattern has 7, I only did 5) and I even left off the last row of squares. It was too large for my design wall if I tried to add the last row. This allows for a bottom border, with his name in large letters!! I will be forced to use the extra blocks, (see below) in some project, but then I could always make another quilt using other fabrics!! I also had time to get the first border on the graduation quilt for my friend's daughter ready. I will need to do the second border, which will contain her last name and then miter the borders....and everything else!! Don't worry, I am still working on applique but not finishing or starting anything right now!! Don't forget to check out Judy's blog and all the other design walls.
When I saw that pattern I thought of it my granddaugter, who graduates in May, but haven't gotten further than that! Like your color choices and it it looks very masculine with the dark background.

At first glance I thought it looked difficult. But your close up of the blocks makes it look very do-able. Your colors are great.
ReplyDeleteSo pretty..er, handsome! Great choice for a guy, even a disinterested teen :)
ReplyDeleteOooo! What a striking design! It looks very complex, but your pre-construction photos demystify it.
ReplyDeleteI love it and thanks for including those, as Nann said, demystifying photos. I'm putting it on my to do list!
ReplyDeleteLovely! Next on my bucket list!
ReplyDeleteGreat quilt. I think your disinterested son will actually appreciate the quilt.
ReplyDeleteReally, Jennifer--you put me to shame! But I don't hate you for it--I thank you for turning what I see as boring quilts pictured in magazines to works of art that are much more inspiring thanks to your wonderful sense of color (and the fact that somehow you've found out how to cram 5 more hours into every day!) This is the 2nd time I've had to look up a quilt in a current magazine wondering how I could have passed it by and realizing it was unrecognizable until you brought it to life!
ReplyDeleteBoth quilts are very effective uses of color (above comment almost makes me want to compare with magazine photo, but I'm too lazy). Kelly's quilt inspires me; I am trying to learn good ways to use large pieces of prints I don't want to break up.
ReplyDeleteI love these quilts and I have a pattern for the on point squares. You have two winners there, my graduate wanted a pixel quilt so I made one. Now to get it quilted before he goes to college!! Enjoy your graduation, I think some of the disinterest is the graduates fear of the future. And some guys just dont' get quilts, lol!!!
ReplyDeleteI would love to see your pixel quilt!! I know, some guys care about this kind of stuff and some don't, my son could care less about color, he was just interested that it was large enough for a bigger bed once he gets out of the dorm. I guess he thinks his future student housing will be large enough for a king or queen size bed. Fantasy versus reality!!
DeleteIncredible design. I love the movement in it.
ReplyDeleteIt is an amazing quilt. I love the colours you chose.
